Follow Argyle
Road (which changes it's name to Cattle Point Road) south for 6
miles to American Camp. Follow the signs into the American Camp
Exhibition
Center, which focuses on the "Pig War" (the boundary dispute
between
the British and Americans). A ranger is on duty to provide assistance and information. A self-guided
foot trail,
approximately one mile long, begins at a nearby parking lot.
|
| Your next stop
is South Beach, which can be found by returning to Cattle Point Road,
turn
right and go 1.5 miles to Pickett's Lane, turn right and go .5 miles
down
to the parking lot. On the way down,
check out the open
pasture to your right to see hundreds
of rabbit
warrens. |
 |
Also, keep an eye peeled for the trees
down the
hill on the right, where you may catch a glimpse of a bald eagle. Also
seen in this area are foxes. South Beach is a beautiful beach that
looks
across the Strait of Juan de Fuca to the Olympic Mountain range. It is
not uncommon to even see orca whales, porpoises cruising by this beach.
This beach is one of my favorites, and it would be easy to spend all
day
here, but you have many other exciting sights to see. South beach has
picnic
benches and rest rooms, but no water.
Back on the moped and continue south
on Cattle Point
Road towards the Cattle Point Lighthouse. At this point, the road runs
along a high bluff and there is a turnout to enjoy the spectacular
views
of Vancouver Island, Victoria, Olympic National Park, Port Angeles, and
on a clear day you can even see Mt. Rainier! A permanent map at this
location
will help identify each island in your view.
